In 1996, ISRAEL ABSORBED 71,300 NEW IMMIGRANTS
bringing the total number of new arrivals since 1989 to 781,800, HA'ARETZ
reported.
According to immigration statistics, 82 percent of last year's total came from countries comprising the former Soviet Union.
Immigration from the United States was down by 15 percent in 1996 compared to the previous year.
