Pentecost,
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

When the disciples at the Pentecost received the power of the Holy Spirit, they got the gifts of Piety, Council (judgment), Wisdom, Fortitude (courage), Knowledge, Understanding (love), Fear of God (Reverence of God). Before the descent of the Holy Spirit, they were confused and they were afraid to speak out and witness what they have "heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and touched with our hands concerns the Word of life, for life was made visible; and we have seen it and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life .." 1Jn. 1-4

After the descent of the Holy Spirit, the word of Jesus concerning the gifts of the Holy Spirit will come to act in their lives: "When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare to you" Jn. 16, 13-15. "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you" Jn. 14, 26. "The advocate, the Spirit of truth, will testify to me and you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning" Jn. 15, 26-27

In fact, they will start to see what they have not been able to see in the past and dare to speak out without any fear. They will give their lives witnessing the truth of Jesus.

These gifts of the Holy Spirit works in us also, if we give chance to the Holy Spirit to work in us. The Holy Spirit will never forces herself on us. We need to let her work in us.
Example: I came back home angry, unwilling to speak to anybody. Our home will be affected by my anger. The gift of the Holy Spirit would help me with the gift of "understanding and love" if I ask the light of the Holy Spirit that I have already received the day of my confirmation. The Holy Spirit resides in me and will come to help if I let it work in me. With these gifts of understanding and love, the Holy Spirit will help me to understand the situation, see others form the eyes of God and respect them, and bring love to the home and forget my feeling and create harmony in the family.

Other example: You are called to choose between tow difficult situations. The gifts of "Council and fear of God" will help me to choose what works with the will of God and would clear my mind, heart and soul to see the best for me and my family.

We need the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They remind us of what Jesus have taught us in the Gospels and use the model of the disciple in the Act of the Apostles as our role models.
