Woman is not an object
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time,

The book of Genesis has two accounts on the institution of marriage. The first (1:26-28) sees marriage as a means for procreation. "God blessed them, saying: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it...". The second one (2:18-24) is our first reading. God answers the human need for friendship, companionship, closeness and warmth.

In the first reading we find that woman is not an object but is "bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh". In fact, in this reading we read "God brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name". Gen. 2:19
All these were objects for Adam, they are at his service. In fact, humanity has subdued the material, the plants and the animals. They are at the service of humanity

The woman is different; she is from the very beginning equal to man in everything. "She is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh". These words are covenantal expressions. Flesh means frailty and bone means power. Woman like man is weak and powerful at the same time. They are able and unable at the same time. Jesus will put it in this way in the Gospel: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" Mat. 26:41 and St. Paul speaks about the works of the flesh and the power of the spirit Gal. 5: 19-24

The we read that man should cling to his wife and leave everything for her. The Holy Scripture says: "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh". Gen.2:24. Strange that the Holy Scripture do not say “woman and man should leave...” but man leaves. In the wisdom of God, woman is not an object, like the things that Adam gave them names. She has her own dignity that do not come from man. Woman dignity comes from God. Man has only to protect, to respect, and appreciate this dignity.

In the Gospel, Jesus insists to give back to the woman what she had lost during centuries. “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female” Mark 10:4-9.

For Jesus married couple is God’s the most beautiful handiwork and therefor no one can separate and pretend to destroy what God had made. God made us for love, to receive and to give. Nothing is greater challenge than to love, and nothing provides a greater opportunity for growth in love, than marriage. This is the wisdom of God who is love.

What are the things that weaken love?  Lack of respect, considering woman as an object of man’s pleasure, poor communication, selfishness, and of course above all infidelity. If God has said that: “A man shall leave his father and mother…” God also meant that woman should do the same and above all it means that both are forming one body, one soul, one will, one love, it means that fidelity is the most important of all.

Today pornography and all what comes with made man and woman objects of pleasure in the market of the world and destroyed what God had build for humanity: A paradise, a family of love.
