President Bush: Demand Sharon Stop the Massacre

Press Release: August 9, 2001 10:00 p.m.

The Middle East Crisis Committee condemns both the bombing of civilians that occurred today in Jerusalem and the new attack by the Israeli government. Stanley Heller, MECC chairperson said, "The Israelis killed and injured were civilians, some of them children. What was done to them was a crime. Yet now a bigger crime is being committed. At this hour a massive attack is being launched against Palestinian people, a long threatened 'decapitation strike' against the leadership of the Palestinians that could also include mass deportations. We call upon the President to demand that Prime Minister Sharon end this massacre. The root cause of all the violence is Israeli rule in the Occupied Territories. The way to end it is to end the occupation."

The Middle East Crisis Committee is a 19 year old human rights organization based in New Haven, CT. It works with Israeli anti-occupation groups and is a member of the Al-Awda, a group working for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

FYI

Israel's Peace Block, the largest anti-occupation organization in that country made this comment about the Jerusalem bombing. "Today's suicide bombing in Jerusalem has proven, in a painful and terrible manner, that the policy of force has failed, says Gush Shalom (The Israeli Peace Bloc). It was proven, for all to see, that the string of 'liquidations' carried out by the government of Israel in the past weeks have not put an end to terrorism. On the contrary, these 'liquidations' but further inflamed the frustrations and hatred on the Palestinian side. More brutal acts of force, on which the Sharon Government is likely to decide today, will have the very same result, and the cycle of bloodshed will continue to claim more and more victims."

In its statement Amnesty International called on the Israeli Government not to take any action which may endanger civilians. "Reprisal strikes are banned in all instances under international humanitarian law." More than 500 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli Defence Forces and other security forces, most of them unlawfully, when no other lives were in imminent danger."
