* 45,000 children died every month due to food and medicine shortages caused by the embargo

* A total of 1.4 million Iraqi civilians, over 750,000 of them were children under the age of five died during the five-year long embargo.

* The health system in Iraq is near collapse due to fund shortages that caused the health budget to dwindle from $ 450 million before the 1990-1991 Gulf War to a mere $ 22 million during the embargo.

* Mortality rate among children under the age of five grew from a monthly average of 593 in 1989 to 4,475 cases in the first half of 1995.
