STATISTICS ON THE CHURCH IN LEBANON

VATICAN CITY, MAY 7, 1997 (VIS) - When Pope John Paul travels to Lebanon this weekend on his 77th pastoral trip outside of Italy, he will be visiting a country which is 10,400 square kilometers in size and has a population of 3 million, of whom 2 million are Catholics.

There are 1,032 parishes in 24 ecclesiastical circumscriptions. The workforce for the apostolate includes 42 bishops (as of April 16, 1997), 1,407 priests (diocesan and religious), 13 permanent deacons and 2,950 men and women religious. There are 633 seminarians.

Educational centers owned or directed by ecclesiastics or religious (elementary, middle and high schools, as well as universities) number 623, and they are attended by 374,614 students. Health, welfare and charitable institutions include, among others, 33 hospitals, 161 infirmaries, 29 homes for
